Time for Masters?
Becoming a Master Cosmetologist takes time, experience, and dedication to the Industry. To obtain a Master Licence (in Hairdressing or Esthetics), Cosmetologists are required to have successfully completed three (3) upgrading courses and have three (3) years' history of active work as a Cosmetologist in a registered cosmetology establishment. Cosmetologists who are self-employed will be required to show proof of business registration and ownership, and length of time of ownership.
How many credits are required for an upgrade?
Cosmetologists are required to have three (3) credits towards their upgrade. Courses can be all practical or one (1) business course can be applied as one (1) credit. The Association continues to offer free educational classes based around business that can also be used as one (1) credit towards your upgrade. Please ensure the Association has your email address on file to receive information on upcoming classes.
How do I know if a course is approved for upgrading?
All Association approved upgrading courses can be found on our website at www.nscosmetology.ca, under the Professional Development tab, and clicking "Approved Upgrade Classes." The CANS approved upgrading list is always changing, so if you see a class no longer on the list that you have attended, please contact the Association for assistance.
Is online education recognized for my upgrade?
Please contact the Cosmetology Association directly with requestions regarding online education relating to professional development (upgrading).
Effective September 23, 2019: cosmetologists that apply and are approved for a Master Licence upgrade are required to take 1 Association approved upgrading course every two years (from date of Master designation) and must submit certificate or proof of participation to the Association by fax (902) 468-7147, email info@nscosmetology.ca or by regular mail to 128 Chain Lake Drive, Beechville, NS B3S 1A2.
Master Application & Process
Cosmetologists are required to fill out an Application for Master Licence and submit to the Association (with required supporting documentation) for review. Cosmetologists who do not have copies of certificates from courses or workshops are required to contact the company for a letter stating proof of attendance. The Cosmetology Association does not automatically receive copies of completed program certificates.

* Fees associated with this application are noted in accordance with the Cosmetology Act, 2012 and its By-Laws (at Schedule B).
This application is subject to a non-refundable Administrative Fee and a Master Licence Fee (upon approval) as per Schedule B of the Association's By-laws. The Administrative Fee is due and payable upon submission of application.

Once a complete Application and Administrative Fee has been received, your Application will be forwarded to the Association's Executive Director for review. The timeline for processing is 6 to 8 weeks. Should your application be denied, the response letter will include reasons for the decision.
Please note: Incomplete Applications will expire 90 days post submission.
