Time for Masters?
Becoming a Master Cosmetologist takes time, experience, and dedication to the Industry.
To obtain a Master Licence (in Hairdressing or Esthetics), Cosmetologists are required to have successfully completed three (3) upgrading courses and have three (3) years' history of active work as a Cosmetologist in a registered cosmetology establishment. Cosmetologists who are self-employed will be required to show proof of business registration and ownership, and length of time of ownership.
How many credits are required for an upgrade?
Cosmetologists are required to have three (3) credits towards their upgrade. Courses can be all practical or one (1) business course can be applied as one (1) credit. The Association continues to offer free educational classes based around business that can also be used as one (1) credit towards your upgrade. Please ensure the Association has your email address on file to receive information on upcoming classes.
How do I know if a course is approved for upgrading?
All Association approved upgrading courses can be found on our website at www.nscosmetology.ca, under the Professional Development tab, and clicking "Approved Upgrade Classes." The CANS approved upgrading list is always changing, so if you see a class no longer on the list that you have attended, please contact the Association for assistance.
Is online education recognized for my upgrade?
The Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia does NOT recognize online education.
Effective September 23, 2019, cosmetologists who apply and are approved for a Master Licence upgrade are required to take 1 Association approved upgrading course every second year and must submit certificate or proof of participation to the Association by fax (902) 468-7147, email email@example.com or by regular mail to 126 Chain Lake Drive, Halifax, NS B3S 1A2.
