Provincial Licence and Permit Renewal
***Licence and Permits expire December 31 each calendar year

CANS ID's are required as of January 1st, 2020.  Please stop by the office to get your new Provincial Licence ID, or send a photo to info@nscosmetology.ca and your photo will be uploaded and sent out with your 2020 licence.  For more information on ID requirements, please go to https://nscosmetology.ca/membership-benefits/id-s-payment-info.

December is a very busy month for the Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia due to renewals and we receive a high volume in calls.  The Association asks that members calling to renew a licence or permit only leaves 1 detailed message with your name and number and a CANS associate will return your call as soon as possible.

How can I pay to renew my licence or permit?

There are a few options when looking to renew your licence or permit (please see below):
  • Over the Phone:  Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Visa/Mastercard Debit
  • Online: By going to https://nscosmetology.ca/members-area
  • Cheque/Money Order: Mail to 126 Chain lake Drive, Halifax, NS B3S 1A2
  • Walk-in:  Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Visa/Mastercard Debit, Cash
If you are paying online please ensure you have your email address on file with the Association if you are setting up a new account.  Steps on how to pay your licence and permit online or how to set up an account online can be found at https://nscosmetology.ca/membership-benefits/id-s-payment-info.

Effective immediately, the Association will no longer be providing licences to anyone who is not the subject member in question when licences/permits are being issued.

Renewal payments can still be made "on behalf of" a member but the licence must be provided to the member directly by mail or in person.  Please ensure if someone is calling on your behalf (mother/partner) that they are able to provide your licence number and mailing address on file.

Salon and Spas calling to renew with multiple employees, we ask that you email us at info@nscosmetology.ca with a list of employees first and last name, member number, DOB and licence payment is to be applied to and a CANS association will prepare your paperwork and contact you directly for payment.
***Please note employee licences will no longer be mailed out to salons due to privacy reasons, so please ensure all members have an up to date mailing address on file with the Association.

Apprenticeship Pilot for Hairstylist Trade Update - October 2018 AGM Updateclick here
The Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia (CANS) and the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency (NSAA) have been working together to develop, plan, implement, and evaluate a blended direct-entry pathway for the Hairstylist trade. The Pilot Project was formally announced at the CANS Annual General Meeting on September 17, 2017. To date, we have confirmed 11 participants/apprentices and 10 salons (11 mentors.)

The development of the Hairstyling Apprenticeship Pilot is in response to an identified and expressed need of the industry for an alternative training pathway, as a value-add to the existing method of training Hairstylists. The purpose of the Pilot is to determine the level of engagement of salon owners to train apprentices on-the-job; identify the level of individual interest of those pursuing Hairstyling as a career through this training pathway; and provide a pathway for those who may not be able to access Hairstylist as a career due to various barriers.

The Pilot involves salon owners registering employees as apprentices who will learn the trade of Hairstylist through a combination of on-the-job learning via a mentor Master Hairstylist in the salon over a two-year period (3,600 hours,) during which apprentices will complete two levels of technical training. Each level will consist of the equivalent to ten weeks' technical training (six weeks online and four weeks in-class/lab.) Apprentices will challenge the Red Seal certification examination and be licensed by CANS upon completion of the required skills, hours of learning, and technical training.
