Time for Masters?
Becoming a Master Cosmetologist takes time, experience, and dedication. Don't wait, you never know when a great offer will come along.
To obtain a Master licence (Hairdressing & Esthetics), Cosmetologists are required to successfully complete three (3) upgrading courses and have three (3) years of active work as a Cosmetologist in a registered cosmetology establishment. Cosmetologists who are self-employed will be required to show proof of business registration, and length of time of ownership.
Effective September 23, 2019, and onward, cosmetologists approved for a Master Licence are required to take 1 approved upgrading course every second year and must submit certificate or proof of participation to the Association by fax (902) 468-7147, email firstname.lastname@example.org or mail 126 Chain Lake Drive, Halifax, NS B3S 1A2.
Master Application & Process:
Cosmetologists are required to fill out an Application for Master Licence and submit to the Association for review and attach all copies of certificates along with your application. Cosmetologists who do not have copies of certificates will be required to contact the company for a letter stating proof of attendance.
* Fees associated with this application are noted in accordance with the Cosmetology Act, 2012, c.39 at Schedule B.
One-time Administrative Fee $55 plus applicable taxes is non-refundable, and due when submitting your application.
Master Licence Fee $90 plus applicable taxes (upon approval)
Applications can be submitted by fax (902) 468-7147, email email@example.com or walk-in.
Once the application and administrative fee has been received, your application will be forwarded to the Associations Executive Director for review. Once the review process has been completed, you will receive notification from the Associations Provincial Exam Coordinator (6-8 weeks). Should your application be denied, the response letter will include the reasons why.
Please note: Incomplete applications will expire 90 days post submission.
How many credits are required for the upgrade?
Cosmetologists are required to have three (3) credits towards their upgrade. Courses can be all practical or one (1) business course can be applied as one (1) credit. The Association continues to offer free educational classes based around business that can also be used as one (1) credit towards your upgrade. Please ensure the Association has your email address on file to receive information on upcoming classes.
How do I know if a course is approved for upgrading?
All CANS approved upgrading courses can be found on our website at www.nscosmetology.ca, under Member Education, and clicking "Approved Upgrade Classes." The CANS approved upgrading list is always changing, so if you see a class no longer on the list that you have attended, please contact the Association for assistance.
Is online education recognized for my upgrade?
The Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia does NOT recognize online education.
